A small team, a real archive, and the gaps said out loud.
CloseBell exists because historical options data is usually sold as a promise. We would rather be a datasheet: here is exactly what the files contain, here is the measured quality, and here is what we cannot give you yet.
The rule we run on
Every number on this site is computed from the actual files, not written from a catalogue page. The sample, the coverage table, the gap list and the quality report are all produced by scripts in the repo, so a buyer can rerun them and get the same answer. If a claim cannot be measured, it is not on the page.
What we are not
Not an OPRA exchange. Not a tick-data provider. Not a real-time feed. We sell end-of-day marks with full chains, and we are explicit that a mark is not a fill. The product is a research archive with checksums, not a trading system.
Where the data comes from
| Source | What it gives |
|---|---|
| Public Parquet mirror (R2) | 8 deep names, 2008–2025, full fields — the sample and deep archive come from here |
DoltHub repo post-no-preference/options | breadth universe, 2020–today, incl. delisted names |
| Cboe delayed quotes | the live current-session capture |
| Yahoo chart / upstream files | underlying prints, reconciled to put-call parity |
| Licensed OPRA source | the 2007 top-up and missing ETFs / index roots, on request |
Full attribution and the licence terms live in the notice. Redistributing inside a commercial product is the buyer's call on the free tiers and is covered by a vendor licence on the paid top-up.
The gaps we will not hide
- No 2007 in the free archive — earliest row is 2008-01-02.
- IWM, SMH, IGV and index roots are top-up, not free.
- The deep archive freezes in December 2025; the recent months come from the breadth tier or the top-up.
- No permanent security id, so a renamed ticker is two symbols.
- Quotes are EOD marks at or before 16:00 ET — a 15:45 fill is a priced option.
